HULL and DECK
Hull construction: Cold molded. It contains three diagonal layers of 1/8" western red cedar with a final layer of 1/10" Honduran mahogany on the topsides. The hull is covered with an 8 oz boat cloth applied with clear epoxy resin. The final finish is clear Awlgrip urethane. The backbone is oak, and the stem is laminated mahogany. Sheer clamps are oak. JOY's interior is designed to minimize the need of frames and stringers. Much of her interior joinery is installed to provide stiffness.
Deck Construction:
The deck is two layers of 4MM marine plywood over laminated aircraft-grade Sitka spruce frames, covered with approximately 7/16" of teak decking. The cabin top is three layers of 3MM marine plywood over laminated aircraft-grade Sitka spruce frames. The top is then covered with Dynel, laid in epoxy, and painted. The cabin sides are approximately 3/8" Honduran mahogany over 3/8" marine plywood.
- Fin Keel - Hydrolically lifts into the hull
- Spade rudder
ACCOMMODATIONS BELOW
The varnished mahogany trim beautifully accents the white bulkheads. Laminated overhead beams are also capped in mahogany, and much of the trim is hand-shaped to give it a distinctive appearance.
The cabin sole is teak with holly inlay and varnished with clear polyurethane. The passageway to the forward cabin is trimmed with laminated mahogany. All the interior trim is coated with gloss marine varnish.
Bronze opening ports and an opening hatch on the foredeck are used throughout to improve light and ventilation.
Vessel Walkthrough:
Down the companionway steps to the Interior below, one steps on the ice chest, which can also serve as a seat for working in the Galley. This portable chest is convenient in that you can take it home and load it up for the day or weekend.
To port and starboard are 7-foot Quarter berths with 4" cushions.
Forward to starboard, at the head of the starboard quarter berth, is the electrical panel, a storage locker containing the stereo, and access to the VHF back.
Forward to port, at the head of that berth, is the Galley, which has a stainless-steel sink with a hand pump and is recessed under a lovely mahogany ring. Forward is a dual-burner electric stove. Lots of storage is accessed beneath both the sink and the stove.
The storage lockers and drawers are at the forward end of the starboard quarter berth. The aft locker has a shore charger and stereo.
- Stereo speakers are built into the aft ends of the quarter berths.
- VFH has a remote mic outlet in the cockpit to control the radio from the helm.
Forward Cabin has cedar hull laminate that shows through its epoxy coating. Shelves provide additional personal gear storage.
The marine Head is located to port under the aft end of the forward berth and has a cover and cushion (as does the starboard side), so the permanent "short berth" can be lengthened to a full-length berth to accommodate an additional two crew members.
