1986 Nautilus Pilothouse 36

East Greenwich, Rhode Island, United States

$69,000

New to Market  -  Highly sought-after Pilothouse Sailboat that was built to be a true, offshore, comfortable boat that can actually sail with the rest of the fleet.   Built by Niagara Nautic & Aztec Yachts in Ontario, Canada.    *** Not to be confused with the earlier version of the Nautilus 36.  Completely new boat with different Hull & Rig designed by Henri Adriaanse and Deck & Interior designed by Henk Zwart.   Only 5 of these boats were built in the 1980's.  This boat has a high performance hull design that was copied from the reputable C & C Company.  Ergonomically, the interior layout and cockpit design is very comfortable for cruising.

Owners of this unique boat have owned it for approximately 10 years.   Their hopes of doing some longer travels have changed and now this boat is being offered for sale.  The overall condition of this boat is surprisingly exceptional and clean.   Added feature is that although 36' LOA, it is more spacious & handsome than any pilothouse, motorsailer that I have seen in the 36' to 44' range.  Great bones and solid.

Boat has had a new (2015) Beta Diesel installed with approximately 900 hours.  Teak interior that is varnished, excellent visibility from the interior helm station, forward cabin with vee-queen & filler, well laid out galley, and can accommodate 3 to 4 guests in addition to the double owner's cabin forward.   No teak decks, fixed, swim-step for ease of accessing the water or dinghy. Easy to handle sloop rig.

Overview - Accommodations

This newer model Nautilus 36 is one of five that were built in the 1980's.  Improvements that were made definitely distinguish this boat from its predecessors of the 1970's.  It is an all-around different and better boat.  Surprisingly for its size, the designers "got it right";  it is not only handsome, but ergonomically, it is an incredibly comfortable boat with a real steering station below and a very well - designed cockpit.

The decks are fiberglass; no teak decks.   The ability to walkaround the decks is quite spacious for a 36' boat.   The windows in the pilothouse are well designed and offer great visibility.  Cockpit is comfortable with center-station helm.  Access to the water, for ease of boarding and provisioning and for safety getting in and out of the water is well thought out.

Going below, the stairs are removable for engine access.  There is a pull-out bench settee on starboard that can be used as a pilot berth.  Brochures say sleeps two, but actually a very spacious single berth.  On port there is a U-shaped settee with a drop-down table that easily converts into a true double berth.  Forward on port is the Galley and it has ample counter space and storage along with a 3 burner propane stove with oven, double welled S/S sink, Adler Barbour refrigerator with ice maker and pressurized hot & cold water, also available with a foot pump (fresh & salt water).  Decor of the galley is basic white laminate with teak trim for a light, easy to clean and sharp nautical look.

Across from the Galley and on starboard is the elevated Pilothouse helm station with a helm chair.  Large windows allow for excellent visibility; with our experience, better than many other 40 to 46' pilothouse boats.   The entire salon, galley and helm station is flooded with light. The interior is a varnished teak wood. The helm station has radios outboard of the station, a wooden ships wheel, instrument panel  with engine controls to the left. Electronics are above the panel. Hatches in the overhead allow for fresh air induced into the cabin area.   There is a vertical wooden pole that is placed from the galley to the overhead, should someone need a hand-hold when underway.  All 7 windows are framed with varnished teak and no signs of leakage; plus a couple of opening port holes.

Going forward on starboard is a bathroom with head, sink and shower.   The interior space is white laminate for easy of cleaning and a light, clean look.  There are various storge places and cabinets in the head area, along with a porthole.  The Master Cabin is forward and basically a vee berth with a filler.  All cabinetry is varnished teak.  There is a hanging locker and several storage lockers and a cabinet for clothing.  All cabin soles are longitudinal teak & holly and in very good condition.   A large opening hatch with a screen allows for light and fresh air to come into the cabin.  Headroom is excellent throughout this vessel;  usually ranging from 6' 6' to 6' 9".

The cockpit is standard style with seats on port & starboard.  Comfortable design for the seats.  Center helm with a rear seat for helmsman.  Access to the cockpit is easy, over the winch coamings.  There is a frame work for a dodger, but actually needs a new dodger.  The bimini top is functional, but someone would probably replace both to keep them the same.   Access to the hard swimstep is from behing the helm seat.  On either side of the helm seat are two vented propane lockers for two tanks.  Also a lift for the outboard or heavy objects. Vessel has a reverse transom design.

Upgrades

This boat has been owner by its current owners since 1986.  Original owners had this boat in fresh water for many years and the boat was stored indoors.  The overall condition of this boat is above average to very good.  There are items that will need to be upgraded by a new owner if they so choose.   Other Upgrades include:

•    2015 Bottom was barrier coated
•    2015 New Beta Marine diesel installed
•    2016 Pilothouse windows rebedded
•    2017 New Radar and GPS
•    2018 Boat has a canvas winter cover
•    2023 Four new batteries installed.
•    New 38 Beta Marine diesel engine was linked to a Volvo MS2V Gearbox, driving a straight shaft with a 3 blade Max Prop. July 2024, diesel has approx. 900 hrs.

Nav Station - Lower Helm - Cockpit Helm

Vessel has Simrad Radar, 2 GPS's, an Autohelm ST 4000 Auto Pilot, 2 VHF radios, engine controls and gauges, switch panel at lower helm for boat functions.    Electrical panel below helm and to outboard starboard.

Enough cannot be said for the visibility this boat has for pilothouse operations.          When piloting from the cockpit helm station, the ability to see your sails is quite good.  Also, access to the winches for single sailing is within reach.  Helm has a electronics panel and a large compass.   Helm seat is designed to be comfortable while seated on port or starboard with higher seat at center.  Helm seat incorporates two propane lockers.

Deck Equipment - Rig

This Nautilus 36 has the original fiberglass decks. Boat seems easy to get around on; easy side decks to maneuver; easy of getting to foredeck; easy access to cockpit; easy access to a hard swimstep with gear to hold a tender; easy access to cabin and pilothouse deck tops for sail handling of main.    Roller furling for genoa.  There is a spinnaker pole but no spinnaker.   Stanchions and life lines are according to code.   There is a deck salt-water washdown system.  Boat comes with dockage lines and 4 fenders.  6 Life jackets. Brackets for holding a tender to swimstep.   Windshield wipers- electric. Cockpit cushions.  There is a bimini on a frame and a frame for a dodger.   It is probably going to a new custom upgrade for the new owner to replace the dodger, bimini and side curtains to keep them looking sharp and the same.  There is a custom canvas winter cover.

Vessel has an LoFrans electric windlass on the foredeck and a dual anchor roller bracket for holding gear.  Three anchors:  15Kg Bruce with 60' chain and 110' rode;  Danforth S33 with 200' rode; and a 3rd that may be a Delta, misc.

Vessel comes with an AP 10' HBI dinghy and a 2003 Mercury 15Hp outboard.

Rigging on the single spreader rig is S/S 1x19 wire and a masthead rig.  Mast and boom are aluminum.   Main and jib are dacron.  Manual backstay adjuster.  Mainsheet traveler.   3 Self-tailing winches; 2 x 46 and 1 x30.  Mainsail cover fits over the boom.

Remarks

This Nautilus 36 Pilothouse Sloop is in Rhode Island.  Boat shows remarkably well.  Current owners had plans to embark on longer sailing adventures but their plans have changed and this unique, pilothouse vessel is now for sale.   Only 5 were built and they are thought of as a remarkable design.  Having been on hundreds of boats and many pilothouse boats up to 50', this boat is remarkable for its ergonomics and space.    The boat has a C&C hull that is renowned for it sailing characteristics.  We encourage your visit and inspections.
