"First, the name GALATEA is dictated by her lineage. GALATEA and NEREIA were two of the Nereids; daughters of Nereus, Greek god of the sea. L. Francis Herreshoff, chose the name NEREIA for a very attractive, able ketch he designed in 1947. GALATEA is an adaptation of that design. In hull form she differs only in that she has a counter stern. The sterns from Mr. Herreshoff's other clipper bowed vessels showed clearly how this was to be done."
Galatea has a wonderful cockpit layout that provides a great deal of lounging space surrounding the helm. Lovely Royal Blue cockpit cushions, custom teak back rest supports (port and starboard of the helm) and an arched helm seat provide the perfect space for family and friends. There is an additional unique teak stern quarter seat built-in to custom bronze pushpit. Excellent visibility of entire deck and sails from the cockpit. Gorgeous varnished custom spoked teak wheel with helm electronics in pod. Off set companionway to starboard with custom teak drop-boards and artistic vents. Teak cockpit grate, engine controls and teak/stainless pedestal cup holders accompany the area. Solar panels on aft deck hatch provide a trickle charge to battery bank when boat is left on her mooring. Additional unique features include a custom teak Butterfly Hatch, two bronze deck prisms, and custom teak folding swim ladder. A true classic!
Galatea's interior is equally stunning, with beautiful woodwork and bright white bulkheads. The well equipped Galley is to port and Nav station/table to starboard. A voluminous main salon lays forward of the companionway with large setees to port and stbd and folding teak salon table on centerline. Lots of storage. A wood burning stove is mounted on the forward bulkhead along with her bronze clock and barometer. Bronze opening port lights allow light and ventilation through the cabin sides. Her refrigeration is uniquely located high and outboard of galley countertop. Front loading doors make it easy to see and reach items. There is outstanding access to the main engine in the galley. Light floods the main salon through the custom teak Butterfly hatch in the overhead that is surrounded by varnished sheathing. Her 12v breaker panel is easily reached yet out of the way to port of the companionway. Classic teak and holy sole.
The head and shower are forward of the main salon. Large doors enclose the unique dual area from both salon and main cabin. Satin-varnished teak cockpit grate on centerline dresses up the pass-thru entry to the main cabin. The v-berth includes a dressing seat, lots of storage, more wood sheathing and additional opening bronze port lights and overhead hatch. An extraordinary vessel in terrific condition and as classic as it gets.
