1984 Gozzard Pilgrim 40

Goderich, Ontario, Canada

$110,000

The Pilgrim 40 was originally designed to ply the many peaceful rivers, canals, and waterways of North America with an uncommon grace of a bygone era. Designed primarily for a cruising couple with occasional guests, the boat became well known for its cruise aboard, live aboard lifestyle with its open and ergonomically friendly layout. The hull design was based on the renowned and seaworthy Great Lakes fishing boats with round bilges that roll far less than hard chine in quartering seas. The traditional fan tail and plumb bow highlight the full displacement hull which is easily driven and economical to operate.

The Pilgrim 40 has an appeal that simply draws your attention… she is the queen of every dock she graces.

Accommodations and Layout

Salty Dog was originally built as a “designer edition” that was customized by the original owner. Butcherblock counters, custom galley and vanity sinks, and a fully functional wood stove set this boat well apart from her immediate sisterships. This interior layout features the owner’s stateroom forward with an athwartships island queen. The cabin includes a dressing settee and a walk-in style closet forward.

Immediately aft is the raised pilot house equipped with engine and ship systems controls with pilot doors accessing both side decks. This area features outstanding visibility while being fully enclosed in bad weather.

Next is a dinette opposite the large fully appointed galley on the main deck. There is a full head to port before the interior opens into a large living room with a pull-out couch. Finally, twin sliding doors open onto the fan tail aft deck with its wrap-around view.

- Two-door standup refrigerator
- Two burner gas stovetop
- Single sink with single lever pull-out faucet with sprayer
- Dinette and nav seat with new ultra leather

Deck

The main working deck has ample freeing ports, and the side decks are wide enough to comfortably walk down both sides while docking. The fore deck is raised and features a windlass and ground tackle fitted on a bow sprit to keep the anchors away from the hull while deploying. The upper deck is accessed from a folding ladder on the aft deck and features a flybridge forward with full controls for those nice days and has ample room for multiple dinghies to be stored.

- Bridge Clearance 24' 6" with mast up
- Bridge Clearance 14' with mast down

- Electric dinghy davit on upper deck
- Extra Torquedo electric outboard

Engine and Mechanicals

Under the living room floor, the boat is powered by an 85 HP Ford Lyman diesel engine marinized by Sabre Marine and fitted with a full Aqua Drive system. Separate throttle and transmission controls. It can propel the boat at hull speed while consuming less than a gallon an hour and do it so quietly that you can barely hear it running.

The in-floor access hatches are large enough to allow for the removal of the entire engine if required. Forward of this is an equipment room which includes an 8kW Westerbeke generator and easy access to many of the ships' systems.

- 2-zone Dometic  Air Conditioning
- Diesel forced hot air heater (condition unknown)
- Washer dryer (condition unknown)
- Numerous spares and other related boating equipment.
- Racor fuel filters

Construction

Originally constructed in Goderich Ontario by North Castle Marine (which later became Gozzard Yachts), she features a varnished Honduran mahogany interior done in the traditional and elegant pullman style with the rich deep reds of the mahogany set against white panels and cane wicker doors. The superior quality of the cabinet work is in stark contrast to the modern plastic look of many of the boats of today.

Additional Information

Additional information from Mike Gozzard at Gozzard Yachts.

In 2022 the boat was moved from Marathon, FL to Goderich, ON, Canada on her own bottom by a Captain. The boat was found in more or less ready-to-go condition and it did make the trip with only a few relatively minor issues that were quickly resolved. The engine ran very well and issue free and most ship systems were fully operational when the boat was winterized in the fall of 2022. The boat was not launched in 2023.

The electronics include Raymarine Axion MFDs (two station) and a FLIR Night Vision camera. The boat has been painted and looks good cosmetically. The brightwork is also in reasonable condition although there are a few areas that need work. The original white oak rub rails have been replaced using composite planking. Like all Pilgrims, there is some moisture in the core on the upper deck, but the sellers have agreed to cover the cost of this repair to be completed by Gozzard Yachts before the boat goes to survey. The upper deck will be problem-free before the contract closes. Most of the tanks are original except for the holding tank which has clearly been added recently. Each tank is
approximately 60 gallons. There were 2 fuel tanks aft in the engine bay, 3 water and a waste tank in the mechanic’s room. The boat has 4 Li house batteries which are in good condition.
