Furthur 

I purchased Furthur within a few months of my moving from Virginia to the PNW to retire. I have sailed most all of my life and had many boats along the way – but this boat had particular significance because it held the potential to explore farther than I had previously. This boat for me epitomized adventure and it did not disappoint. I had never sailed a steel hulled, junk-rigged schooner - much less owned one. I soon realized that once her sails were hoisted – that in many respects she sailed herself. There were no flapping of sails or standing rigging to duck and avoid. The sails impressively handled light to strong winds and were a great pleasure to set. The simplicity of her rig made her just as attractive to take out for day sails as long transits. When there was no wind, the Volvo Penta engine provided reliable propulsion – including most recently the eight hour transit from the lower Hood Canal to Port Townsend to have her hauled out for inspection. I also loved the fact that while she may not have been equipped with all the bells and whistles of modern boat amenities – she was outfitted for serious voyage making. Her below deck wood interiors were modeled with beautiful but practical wood craftsmanship – and included extensive stowage. Just as importantly, Furthur possesses an impressive navigational suite. Over these last eight years I have sailed her up throughout the San Juan Islands and across the Puget Sound – and she could sail much further.

“The subject vessel “Furthur” is a professionally built Junk rigged sailing schooner designed for ease of handling and reefing under sail while cruising protected, coastal and near coastal waters in comfort and safety. Built entirely of welded steel plate, she has a simple Junk rig adopted for the ancient Chinese trading junks that explored the oceans of the world long before Europeans had left their caves. With no standing wire rigging, the tapered mast twist at the top to spill wind, and the sails are easy to reef by simply lowering the halyards, allowing the full battens to fall and flake the sail. Her interior is spacious and well laid out, and you enter the pilothouse with the inside steering helm, and winches, sheets, and halyards for both main and mizzen sails. Further forward is the main salon with galley, navigation station, table and seating arrangement, with the head compartment and V-berth all the way forward.”
