This 1977 44’ CSY Walkover is a tough, heavy built blue water cruiser. In fact, Cruising World Magazine included the CSY 44 in its list of the 40 best sailboats of all time! CSY boats were built to unusually high standards of strength, durability, and quality consistent with Lloyd’s design and boat building requirements. Uniquely, CSY did not use wood lamination in its construction, the only wood used in the construction of these boats are heavy laminated structural stringers, bulkheads and interior furniture. The CSY hull is up to 1.5" of solid fiberglass reinforced plastic resin with 14 dual layers, and the deck is also solid fiberglass.
The current owner has sailed s/v Gentoo down the east coast of the United States to the Rio Dulce, Guatemala, then sailing to Honduras and then taking annual trips to Belize and back to the Rio Dulce where she is currently located waiting for her next adventure.
S/v Gentoo has a Ballast/Displacement ratio of 38.3%, which indicates good stability, especially under harsh weather conditions. This vessel is the shoal draft version at approximately 4’11” with a fin keel with rudder on skeg. S/v Gentoo is a cutter rig, which is ideal for offshore cruising, providing greater flexibility and handling in varying wind conditions. All 5 sails are in good condition with sail covers for all. The main halyard winch needs repair/replaced but there’s a replacement on board to install.
This vessel is powered by a rebuilt Perkins 4-154 62hp diesel engine. She carries 100 gallons of fuel and 400 gallons of fresh water. For navigation, there is a Standard Horizon and a Raymarine depth finder with a transducer that needs to be installed (parts are onboard), and a Simrad autopilot. She comes with a 12v Nillson vertical windlass, an 88lb Delta anchor with 200ft 3/8” chain and a 66lb Bruce style anchor for a spare.
Both the exterior and interior of this vessel are spacious with abundant storage throughout. The center cockpit has plenty of seating and storage compartments and comes with a dodger and bimini. The interior has 6.7ft head room with many opening hatches and classic bronze port lights. In the galley there is a Force 10 propane stove with oven and two 20lb aluminum propane tanks are also on board. There is a large 12v and 110v refrigerator box and hot and cold pressure water. Both marine heads come with separate holding tanks and a separate shower is forward. The separate cozy aft cabin is accessed by walking through the cockpit.
Both the interior and exterior are in need of some cosmetic detailing, but with some TLC and upgrades, S/v Gentoo has all the potential to safely and comfortably take you anywhere you wish to go. If you are looking for a solid blue water cruiser, then s/v Gentoo is certainly a good investment.
